Periodontology (Gum problems)<\/h1>\n

Inflamed gum tissue looks soft, red and swollen and bleeds easily when you brush your teeth. A superficial gum inflammation is called gingivitis. <\/strong><\/p>\n

What causes gingivitis?<\/h3>\n

If you do not or not correctly brush your teeth, your teeth will get covered with plaque, a white\/yellow sticky layer consisting of food remains, mucus and various types of bacteria. Plaque is particularly deposited along the edge of the gums.<\/p>\n

If you do not remove plaque daily, bacteria may cause inflammation (gingivitis). Although initially superficial, this inflammation can progress to deeper layers.<\/p>\n

Saliva may also cause plaque to calcify into tartar, a hard substance that you cannot remove yourself. You will then need to make an appointment with the dentist or dental hygienist. If gingivitis is left untreated, it may cause periodontitis. And that\u2019s even worse!<\/p>\n

Periodontitis<\/h3>\n

If gingivitis is left untreated for too long, the superficial plaque\/tartar may spread below the gums. The bacteria will then nestle between the teeth and gums and subsequently break down the tissue and bone. This causes a pocket between the tooth and gum, which gradually fills with plaque and tartar. If this destruction reaches the root end, the teeth will lose their hold on the support tissue (periodontium) and will become loose.<\/p>\n

We check your gums during every visit, to see whether the transition between the fillings and teeth is still smooth and whether there are no pockets under the gums.<\/p>\n

Where necessary, plaque and tartar are removed. We can also apply tooth-protective substances such as fluoride and polish your teeth. If you have gum problems that threaten your oral hygiene, we draw up a treatment plan.<\/p>\n

Tandvleesontsteking<\/h1>

Ontstoken tandvlees ziet er zacht, rood en gezwollen uit en kan bij het poetsen gemakkelijk gaan bloeden. Een oppervlakkige tandvleesontsteking noemen we gingivitis. Dit kan op elke leeftijd voorkomen, maar doorgaans vooral boven het 10e -15e levensjaar.<\/p>

Hoe ontstaat gingivitis?<\/h3>

Als u uw tanden niet of op een verkeerde manier poetst, blijft er tandplak op de tanden achter; dit is een wit\/geel kleverig laagje, bestaande uit voedselresten, slijm en verschillende soorten bacteri\u00ebn. Tandplak hecht zich vooral langs de tandvleesrand. Als u tandplak niet dagelijks verwijdert, zorgen de bacteri\u00ebn voor een (vooralsnog oppervlakkige) ontsteking (gingivitus). Tevens kan tandplak door speeksel verkalken tot tandsteen; dit is hard van structuur en kunt u zelf niet meer verwijderen. Een afspraak bij de tandarts\/ mondhygi\u00ebnist is dan noodzakelijk. Als gingivitus niet wordt behandeld, kan dit leiden tot parodontitis, U bent dan nog verder van huis!<\/p>

Parodontitis<\/h3>

Blijft een tandvleesontsteking te lang onbehandeld, dan kan het oppervlakkige tandplak\/tandsteen zich tot onder het tandvlees uitbreiden. De bacteri\u00ebn nestelen zich dan tussen de tanden en het tandvlees en breken vervolgens de vezels en het kaakbot af. Hierdoor ontstaat een verdiepte ruimte (pocket) tussen de tand en het tandvlees, die zich langzaam vult met tandplak en tandsteen. Gaat deze afbraak door tot aan de wortelpunt, dan verliezen tanden en kiezen hun houvast aan het steunweefsel (parodontium) en zullen ze los gaan zitten.<\/p>

Gezond tandvlees: de basis voor een goed gebit<\/h3>

Bij elke periodieke controle kijken wij hoe gezond uw tandvlees is, of de vullingen goed aansluiten en of er ruimten onder de tandvleesrand (pockets) zijn. Waar nodig worden tandplak en tandsteen verwijderd. Ook kunnen we gebitsbeschermende middelen zoals fluoride aanbrengen en uw gebit polijsten.
